The 5th Wave - Rick Yancey Edit (May 9, 2013): Added a few explanations and a rather intense spoiler exclaiming my frustrations.

VLOG REVIEW: I don't feel like writing a full written review for this one. The one below should suffice for a while. I'm still pretty pissed about what happened, so here's a video review. Sorry for whatever gibberish I come up with! CLICK HERE FOR FAYE'S VIDEO REVIEW OF THE 5TH WAVE.

WRITTEN REVIEW

The video review says it all, but basically, to sum it all up, 2 stars because:

PREDICTABLE.Highly, annoyingly predictable. It didn’t leave much to the imagination because I already knew what was happening 6000 light years away. Usually I’m okay with this since there’s really not much originality before and it all depends on the execution, but this was hyped so much that it made me think there was something special about it. But no, there wasn’t. Been there, done that. A lot of other stuff were better.

ANNOYING HEROINE. Fickle, feisty, rude, reckless. A train wreck, if you ask me. She kept on telling herself to trust no one, over and over and over like an ancient mantra, and cue in the first guy she sees and WHAM! she wonders what his kisses are like, she gets lost in his chocolate brown eyes. Uhhh… yeah, where have I seen that before? There were other stuff, too, but she’s exhausting so I’d rather not bother. But if you’re tired of this kind of heroines, she’ll get on your nerves, too.

SITUATIONS THAT DIDN’T MAKE SENSE. Lots of bullshitry here, folks. Lots and lots and lots. I can't talk about this here as it will give you spoilers, but in case you want to see: So the aliens go and take children to fight for them. And they kill the adults. Take children. Kill adults. Let children fight. Let children kill the adults. LOL? WHAT? THAT DOESNT MAKE ANY FUCKING SENSE. WHY WOULD YOU BOTHER TAKING KIDS, BRAINWASHING THEM, TRAINING THEM FOR WHO-KNOWS-HOW-LONG, WHEN ADULTS ARE MORE EFFICIENT THAN THIS? AND, OH OH! WHY THE FUCK WOULD ALIENS DO THAT IN THE FIRST PLACE WHEN THEY CAN JUST KABOOM AND KILL ALL OF THEM ALTOGETHER?! OH I KNOW WHY! BECAUSE WE NEED A REASON TO MAKE THIS YA GODDAMNIT!. Phew.

CLICHÉ TO THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF DOOM. The romance wasn’t a romance, it was bullshit. One love interest is of course something else… and he realizes after meeting the heroine that he doesn’t want to be a killing machine anymore, and she’s willing to do anything for her… yup, yup. *yawn* Of course, there were many instances in which the book tried to look into the topic of humanity and what it means to be human... that's very deep, isn't it? But this book is not subtle about it as it keeps on repeating this subject matter over and over and over again that it loses its meaning and "omg-how-philosophical-and-deep" factor. Dude. The 6th time I got to the word "humanity" I wanted to bang my head on the wall.

Overall, I think the hype killed it. I expected too much and was just severely disappointed, that despite being a generally decent book, I couldn’t give it higher than two because of the bitter feelings that ensued. Sorry.
